Alaaddin Burucerdi, Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said that a domestic application called “Sorush”, which is the most popular mobile messaging application in the country due to “national security”, could be used instead of Telegram,. Burucerdi, who spoke on a local radio, replied that the Telegram, which caused the controversy in the country, would be inaccessible. Bearing in mind that the Telegram would be replaced by a similar Iranian messenger called “Soroush”, Burucerdi said this plan will be realised until 20th of April. Burucerdi stated that the decision was taken by the highest authorities of the country. “Considering the destructive role of the Telegram during the last year’s protest, this issue is important for our national security,” Burucerdi said. The demonstrations, which began last year on December 28th in Mashhad with a group of demonstrators protesting the cost of life, unemployment and corruption in the country, soon turned into anti-regime demonstrations across the country. The demonstrators had organized their actions through mobile applications, especially Telegrams. The Telegram is said to have been used by some 40 million people in a country with a population of 80 million.
