Farmers Protest Against Irans Ineffective Agriculture Policy
It has been reported that Iran’s farmers in the province of Isfahan have protested because they can not find a solution to the drought in the region. According to Iran’s semi-official news agency Fars, the farmers in the eastern part of Isfahan protested against government’s agrarian policy after the Friday prayers. Ayatollah Yusuf Tabetabainejad, Imam of the city of the Isfahan ranchers performed with the pannels which says “Where is the Zahende river?” “Our guests came here to defend their rights.” Criticizing Iranian President Hasan Ruhani, protesters called for the allocation of water to the agricultural lands. Iran’s historical and touristic city “Zayende Rud”, the symbol of Isfahan, has dried up during last 10 years. The Tehran government, which has been working to revitalize the river, has not succeeded so far. Drought in the region negatively affects agriculture, but it is said that the people of the region who make their living by farming have no choice but to migrate to urban centers. Unemployment, rising inflation, corruption and protests against the government’s agricultural policies are sometimes turning into anti-regime demonstrations. Last year, on 28 December, the demonstrations were held for days, protesting the increasingly worsening economic situation in the country’s second largest city, Mashhad.
