Araz News: At a football match between the Norwegian and Azerbaijani national teams in Oslo, Azerbaijani spectators took the opportunity to hoist a large sign bearing Azerbaijani nationalist slogan, “South Azerbaijan is not Iran.”

The June 13 bout, which was a qualifier for Euro 2016, ended in a goalless draw.

Fans of the Azerbaijani team were also seen waiving the Turkish and Azerbaijani teams while cheering.

It should be noted that the “South Azerbaijan is not Iran” banner was initially erected in the city of Tabriz during a football match between Tractor Sazi Tabriz and Abu Dhabi’s Al Jazira Football Club. Since banners and signs bearing the phrase can be seen at many sporting events featuring Azerbaijani players.

The banner’s creators drew influence from a similar nationalist banner famously draped in Catalonia’s Camp Nou stadium, which read “Catalonia is not Spain.”
