Azerbaijan to use satellite technologies for energy security

Araz News: On 29 AUGUST 2015,The resources of Azersky low-orbit satellite of Azerbaijan can be used to ensure the safety of pipelines for the delivery of energy, Azercosmos OJC ,Trend reported.

Azercosmos OJC was created in accordance with the order of the president of Azerbaijan on May 3, 2010 for the launch of the telecommunications satellite into orbit, management and implementation of operational work. The OJC shares are state-owned.

The company said that security issues are within the competence of the relevant structures, which are aware of the possibilities of Azersky in details.

“We are ready to provide them with satellite communication services,” the company said.

“Regarding the cases when the resources of the satellite can be used, it directly depends on the structures themselves.”

The satellite, dubbed Azersky, was handed over to Azerbaijan’s control on the basis of an agreement inked Dec. 2 at the Bakutel-2014 exhibition by Azercosmos, an Azerbaijani state-run company, and the Airbus Defence and Space.

Under the agreement, Azersky and SPOT 6 satellites, owned by the French company, will be shared to provide better services. Azersky and SPOT 6 are capable to carry out daily survey of the surface patches of the Earth with a total area of 6 million square kilometers, which is 10 times the size of France. The resolution of the obtained images will amount to 1.5 meters.

SPOT 6 remote sensing satellite was launched September 9, 2012, and Azersky (SPOT 7) – June 30, 2014.
