President ilham Aliyev Will Visit Tehran Soon

President ilham Aliyev will pay an official visit to Iran in the near future to discuss expansion of ties and cooperation, a senior diplomat announced on Sunday.

“Azerbaijan’s president will travel to Iran to take part in the negotiations that we will have about issues related to borders and existing problems for mutual agreements,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Oceania Ebrahim Rahimpour told FNA on Sunday.

He explained that more work has to be done for promoting economic activities along the two states’ borders, and said, “The Iranian foreign ministry will render the necessary support to improve investments and economic activities in the border region of Aras.”

The Iranian deputy foreign minister pointed to the recent trilateral meeting among the foreign ministers of Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey in the Turkish city of Van, and said, “The meeting was satisfactory and we are negotiating with those countries for expansion of relations.”

Last month, President Rouhani in a message to President Aliyev invited him to pay an official visit to Tehran in the near future.

Iranian Ambassador to Baku Mohsen Pakayeen in a meeting with President Aliyev in Baku in late February submitted President Rouhani’s message to him.

Meantime, President Aliyev welcomed his Iranian counterpart’s invitation, and said, “A new chapter has started in the bilateral relations after my meeting with Mr. Rouhani in Davos, Switzerland.”

The Azeri president reiterated that his country is ready to cooperate with Iran in all areas.

Pakayeen and Aliyev also discussed other issues of mutual interest during their meeting.

Iran has recently enhanced efforts to boost political, economic and cultural ties and cooperation with the regional and neighboring countries, specially the Central Asian states.

In January, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Tehran is ready to help Azerbaijan with technical know-how and technology to assist the Central Asian state in developing its energy reserves.

“Iran is ready to forge closer energy ties with Azerbaijan and transfer its know-how in oil and gas sectors to its northern neighbor,” President Rouhani said in a meeting with Aliyev in Davos, Switzerland.

The Iranian president reiterated that Tehran and Baku share many commonalities, and said, “Azerbaijan’s progress is very important for Iran.”

Aliyev, for his part, termed the cultural, religious and social commonalities between Azerbaijan and Iran as a strong point in the expansion of Baku-Tehran relations.

The two presidents also exchanged viewpoints on current regional issues, cultural ties and the development of bilateral business cooperation, and invited each other to visit their respective countries.
