Three old Turkish names bring back in Urmia city
Araz News: City Council of Urmia, second largest city of the South Azerbaijan, decided to bring back old Turkish names of three historical monuments.
“Uch Gozlu Korpu” (Three Eyes Bridge), “Doqquz Pille” (Nine Stairs) and “Qoyun Korpusu” (Sheep Bridge) are the historical Turkish names to be given back. During the last eight decades Persian names were used instead of original Turkish names.
During the regimes of Pahlavi dynasty and Islamic Republic almost all Turkish and Arabic place and memorial names were replaced by Persian ones due to chauvinist ideology of the state.
Regaining the historical names is one of the struggles that non-Persian nations in Iran give against the regime. Gaining back three historical names is a success, even if small, for Turkish Nation of Azerbaijan.
