Salty winds are on way / Tabriz will not be habitable after Lake Urmia Dries
Araz News: Isa Kalantari, chief coordinator of the Lake Urmia Revival Work Team said “Salty winds are on way”. He added: “After waters of the Lake Urmia have dried out Azerbaijan region experienced big losses. Urgent actions have to be taken, otherwise damages will be Irreparable. Lake Urmia needs a minimum period of 10 years to be repaired if everything goes well”.
Alireza Monadi a member or Iranian Parliament warned: “If Lake Urmia becomes dry its salt will harass eyes of all Iran’s people and Tabriz will become inhabitable”.
Dr. Naser Aqh an academic of Urmia University and senior figure of Lake Urmia rescue operation notes that 80% of Lake Urmia has dried out and we do not have more than 2 or 3 years to complete dry.
Lake Urmia the second large salt lake in the world is drying. Critics blame Iranian state of bad water resources management. President Rouhani promised to rescue Lake Urmia during his electoral campaign. But up top now almost nothing has done.
South Azerbaijan where the Lake Urmia is located is an ethnically problematic region of Iran. South Azerbaijani Turks seek their national rights despite governmental suppression. Lake Urmia’s situation effects political tensions in the region. Some violent protests erupted in the region related to Lake Urmia.
