EU; ‘Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict Must Be Resolved Under International law’
Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for External Relations and Security Policies, said: “The Nagorno-Karabakh issue must be resolved within the framework of international law”. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Memmedyarov and Mogherini attended the European Union (EU) and Azerbaijan Association Council meeting in Brussels and held a joint press conference. Mogherini said she hopes that the agreement will be signed soon, reminding them that they had made important negotiations in the past years to sign a comprehensive agreement between the Baku administration and the EU. Emphasizing that Azerbaijan is an important partner for the EU, Mogherini pointed out that the Union is a leader in the trade sphere of Azerbaijan. Mogherini noted that the Southern Gas Corridor is an important example of relations with Azerbaijan in the energy field and underlined that the “Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway Line” is an important stage in the transportation between Europe and Central Asian countries.
Referring to the importance of the Aviation Agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan, Mogherini thus stated that more people will travel between Azerbaijan and Europe. Mogherini stated that “Nagorno-Karabakh issue should be resolved under international law.” Memmedyarov also said that the Aviation Agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan will accelerate the development of tourism in his country. Stating that he believes that relations between Baku and the Union should be developed in energy and transport areas, Memmedyarov said that the 4th meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Consultative Council will take place in Baku on 15 February. “I believe that the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Project (TANAP) will be opened this year. Azerbaijan and the EU are constantly sharing their views on regional security issues and I believe that exchanging ideas will be beneficial not only for Azerbaijan but also for Europe, “he said.
