URMIA LAKE CRISES COME TO AN INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY’S PLATFORM (Photo Gallery)
Araz News: Environmental activist groups and Azerbaijan national activists have prepared banners in the graduation ceremony of Middle East Technical University ‘METU” that is one the best international university, to express their concern about the process of drying the lake Urmia on 2nd of July 2017.
These activists have shown their protest to the inattention of the Iranian regime to the Urmia Lake crisis and carried ‘SAVE LAKE URMIA’ banner in front of more than 50,000 people and international media.They have demanded world attention to the issue of global climate change and drying lake Urmia.
This type of protest happens for a first time, therefore, many social media and news agency broad cast the students’ action.
Lake Urmia in northwestern Iran was once the largest lake in the Middle East and the sixth-largest saltwater lake on Earth with a surface area of approximately 5,200 square kilometers. The lake has shrunk to 75 percent of its former size, mostly due to damming of the rivers that flow into it and pumping of groundwater from the area.
