New addiction treatment camp to come on stream in Iran
Araz News: A new addiction treatment camp will come on stream in Iran on July 6, said Mohammad Reza Azarnia, the secretary of the coordination council to fight against drugs in Tehran Province.
Drug addictions has been turned into a major concern for people in Iran, he added, ISNA news agency reported on July 5.
More than 3,700 persons in Tehran have been killed in fight against drugs, he noted.
Unfortunately, more than two percent of university students and one percent of high school students are consume narcotics, he said.
More than 60 percent of imprisoned persons have been jailed in connection with narcotics, he said, adding, 16,307 persons were arrested in this regard in the first quarter of the year, 570 of them were Afghan and Pakistani nationals.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called on the people to strengthen fight against narcotics.
In a message on the occasion of June 26, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Rouhani said due to being the neighbor of a country, which is the main source of cultivation and production of narcotics, Iran has always been exposed to the highest rates of damages and losses to its people.
Head of Iran’s Drugs Police Ali Moayedi said June 24 that the Iranian police seized some 135 metric tons of illegal drugs in the past three months.
In the meantime 92,000 people have been arrested across the country on drugs-related charges, he added.
He further said addiction among Iranian women is on the rise.
