Youth unemployment rate in Iran hits 21.5%

Araz News via trend: Iranian Deputy Minister of Cooperative, Labor, and Social Welfare Hassan Taei said Iran’s economy should grow by the rate of seven percent so that enough job opportunities for the educated youth are created, adding that the unemployment rate for the said population is about 22 percent.

Right now there are 22 million employed people in the Iranian economy and there are two million jobless people, he said, Mehr news agency reported June 21.

Iran’s unemployment rate is 11.5 percent.

Taei said the unemployment rate for the youth is 18 percent while the rate is 21.5 to 22 percent for the educated people. He added that the unemployment rate for educate women is 30 percent, meanwhile for men it is 12 percent.

Unemployment and insufficient investment has led to an increase in unemployment rate, he observed.

The Economy and Finance Minister Ali Tayebnia told Trend Jan. 29 that he predicted an economic growth of 3 to 4 percent for Iran in 2015. The figure announced by the Iranian minister is at least 5 times more than the optimistic estimations released by international bodies.

On June 7, Minister of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare Ali Rabiei said some 40 percent of Iranian university graduates were jobless.

“In order to attain a single-digit inflation rate, some 800,000-900,000 jobs should be created,” he said.

Iran created 400,000 jobs in its production and industry sectors in the past fiscal year, ended on March 20, after subtracting 200,000 workers who were laid off.
