4 police officers killed in a mine attack in southeastern Turkey

Araz News:August 10, 2015, Four police officers were killed and one was seriously wounded on Monday after a landmine suspected to have been planted by Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorists in the southeastern Turkish province of Şırnak exploded,today zaman reported.

Local media reported that the landmine exploded while an armored police vehicle was passing by the Başak neighborhood in Şırnak’s Silopi district where a police and three PKK militants had been killed.

In a statement released on its website, the Şırnak Governorate confirmed four police officers were killed and another wounded at around 9 a.m. when a remote-controlled landmine planted by “separatist terror organization members” exploded.

On Friday, security forces went to the Başak and Barbaros neighborhood of Silopi to fill in trenches that the PKK’s youth wing had dug as part of their “resistance.”

As security forces arrived in the area, an armed confrontation took place. Police officers Hamdi Ulaş, Kamuran Bilin and Hıdır Tamboğa were killed, while seven others, including two police officers, were injured in the clashes.

Demir, who was critically injured, was taken to Diyarbakır Dicle University Hospital where he later died.

After a suicide bomber carried out an attack in the Suruç district of Şanlıurfa on July 20, killing 33 activists and injuring more than 100 people, PKK-related tension in southeasternTurkey has risen. Two police officers were shot in the head by PKK members in retaliation for the Suruç terrorist attack on July 22. The violence and PKK-led attacks further escalated when Turkey carried out air strikes against PKK bases in neighboring Iraq.
