Turkish authorities launch probe into video of handcuffed workers laying face down(video)

Araz News: August 08, 2015, Turkish Interior Ministry has launched an investigation into a leaked video that shows a member of the Turkish special forces yelling at handcuffed workers laying their faces down in reportedly southeastern district of Yüksekova, today zaman reported.

While the conflict between security services and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) escalates, a disturbing video surfaced on the social media caused outrage, raising fears that the authorities’ may exceed their legal discretion in cracking down on sympathizers of the PKK.

In the video, which cannot be verified by Today’s Zaman, a member of the special forces, accompanied by several of his colleagues standing with automatic rifles, starts yelling at the suspects. The suspects lay their faces down and handcuffed from behind.

The footage starts with the officer saying “You will see the power of the Turkish Republic,” adding that he knows them very well and that those who are betraying the country will be dealt with.

“What did this state do to you?” the officer yells. “You will see the strength of the Turk.”

There is no indication as to where the video was shot and who the suspects are. But the rhetoric of the officer is similar to what nationalists use against Kurdish separatists.

Pro-PKK news agency DİHA reported that the video was shot on in Hakkari’s Yüksekova district on Aug. 5, predominantly populated by Kurds and is one of the most restive area. The report claimed that special forces stormed a private construction site in the north of Selahattin Eyyubi airport. It added that 52 people were detained during the raid while 46 of them were released after they were questioned by the police. It was not immediately clear on what charges the suspects were taken.

Since the resumption of air strikes by Turkish fighter jets in northern Iraq and within Turkey on targets that belong to the PKK, hundreds of suspects believed to be linked to the PKK were detained. Kurdish activists claim that up to 1,800 members of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democracy Party (HDP) were detained in a month-long crackdown.

State-run news agency claimed that at least 390 PKK militants were killed in raids and bombings by the Turkish security forces and 400 of them were injured. 150 of them have life-threatening injuries. Nearly 30 members of the Turkish security services were killed in clashes or surprise ambush attacks. The latest incident was in Diyarbakır, where a police officer surrendered to his wounds and died, a day after clashes with PKK militants in Silopi.

Prime Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu ordered the Interior Ministry to launch an investigation into the incident. The statement said Davutoğlu won’t allow any anti-democratic practice while the authorities are “fighting against terrorism.”
